Skiing

Skiing is a recreational activity and competitive sport that involves gliding down snow-covered slopes on skis, which are elongated, narrow pieces of equipment attached to a skier’s boots. The primary purpose of skiing is to traverse and descend snow-covered terrain, often on ski resorts that offer groomed trails and lifts for accessing higher elevations. There are various styles of skiing, including alpine skiing, which focuses on downhill racing and turns; cross-country skiing, which involves traveling across relatively flat terrain; and freestyle skiing, which incorporates tricks and jumps. Equipment used in skiing typically includes skis, ski boots, poles, and appropriate winter clothing for insulation and protection against the cold. Skiing can be practiced for leisure, fitness, or as a competitive sport, with events such as slalom, giant slalom, and downhill racing recognized in winter sports competitions.
